Job Description:
At Regions, the Principal Data Engineer supports the Data and Analytics organization by designing, customizing, and implementing data platforms for the development and production of large-scale data pipelines and analytics. The Principal Data Engineer will use knowledge of big data frameworks and software architecture expertise to design promotion practices for data pipelines, implement dev/ops capabilities for data products, and design and help implement data architectures such as data mesh architecture. The Principal Data Engineer is a forward thinking and visionary role and will be a key leader in developing and supporting Regions' data engineering strategy.
Primary Responsibilities
Designs and implements self-service data product deployment strategies
Promotes Regions' cloud strategy and design cloud-native data engineering workflows
Develops tooling to facilitate data product development, deployment, and monitoring
Develops automated workflows for data engineering pipelines
Collaborates with data engineers, machine learning engineers, and data scientists to develop data pipelines
Creates RESTful application programming interface (APIs) for streamlining, monitoring, and reporting on data products throughout the products' lifecycles.
Designs and implements deployment infrastructure
Designs and drives data architecture strategy including data contracts and data mesh approaches.
Creates and evangelizes best practices in data operations
Helps contribute to a collaborative, open developer environment
Leads improvements in methodology or initiatives to address capability gaps or increase efficiency
Offers advice and guidance to junior associates for sake of continuous improvement
This position is exempt from timekeeping requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
This position is incentive eligible.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a quantitative field
Eight (8) years of related experience
Preferences
Master's degree
Experience with big data and machine learning tools such as Spark, Dask, Kubeflow, Airflow
Experience with micro-service architecture and web-services.
Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP, Azure, Snowflake, Terraform
Working knowledge of data engineering pipelines, common data deployment pitfalls, and inherent complexities when managing data at scale.
Sills and Competencies
Demonstrated experience with software engineering best practices and implementing software development lifecycles.
A proven track record of working in teams and of leading projects
Demonstrated success in one or more of the following programming languages: Python, Golang, Java, JavaScript, Rust and Scala
Experience developing RESTful APIs
Experience with Docker/Kubernetes
Experience delivering and scaling data products in production
