The Commercial Underwriter is accountable for providing an independent comprehensive written evaluation of designated commercial loans. The analysis will conclude in supporting the approval or rejection of a loan request and recommendations on structure and risk rating. The individual collaborates closely with commercial loan officers and other employees to identify and manage risk on commercial loans. The Commercial Underwriter ensures that loans are underwritten to comply with policy and/or are suitably mitigated. Works under limited supervision and in compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations. The Commercial Underwriter supports loan and revenue growth through identification and management of risk, and identification of alternative lending structures or terms.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs diverse complex analysis and prepares supporting documentation of CRE & C&I commercial loans.
Partners with loan officers and commercial underwriters to screen loan packages and collect “due diligence” materials.
Generates financial ratios and spreads, using software, to evaluate customers’ financial status.
Prepares credit memos, annual reviews and assists in helping prepare loan files and credit packages to submit to loan committees for approval.
Assists the CCO with various credit related projects
Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of financial accounting theory, methodology and logic
Ability to analyze and interpret corporate and personal financial statements and tax returns
Extremely proficient with Word and Excel, including the use of systems and user generated formulas, macros, charts, and tables.
Financial statement and tax return spreading, including proficiency in preparing pro-forma statements within Sageworks Credit Analyst (preferred) or other software.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Ability to meet service level agreements
Ability to manage multiple and/or shifting priorities, and produce professional and accurate work, under time constraints.
Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and in a group environment.
Extensive knowledge of commercial credit and lending concepts, practices and regulations.
Established capacity to make complex decisions regarding business and lending activities.
Ability to research industry sources needed for credit evaluations.
Possesses innovative written and analytical skills and the capacity to analyze balance sheet structure, and income and cash flow trends on commercial credits.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related discipline
Minimum Experience: 3 plus years job specific credit underwriting experience
Formal Commercial Credit training program preferred
