The MBA is searching for a President and CEO. This person serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland Bankers Association and its subsidiary (“MBA”) and as Executive Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Bankers Association (“holding company”). As MBA CEO, this person serves as the chief advocate and spokesperson for the Maryland Banking Industry and leads member relations efforts in support of MBA member banks. This person provides leadership at the MBA and holding company levels, in collaboration with the holding company CEO.
The successful candidate will be a builder, a self-starter who engenders confidence and trust and has unquestionable integrity and good judgment. This person must be patient, flexible, persuasive, and effective. Smart, quantitative and analytical, this executive must also be a people person able to build professional and social relationships. A premium will be placed on leadership and innovative thinking as well as the ability to manage a changing, complex organization. Politically aware, the President/CEO will be a quick study, have an ability to think on his/her feet, establish rapport with and relate to and respect a variety of constituencies and will be capable of leading a dynamic, diversified member association.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Governance:
- Provides thoughtful and visionary executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides the Association’s mission.
- Maintains a complete understanding of MBA and holding company policies, activities and plans.
- Maintains a productive working relationship with member bankers and MBA & Virginia Bankers Association professional staff.
- Maintains personal professional development.
- Maintains complete confidentiality of sensitive bank-related information.
- Participates in the development and implementation of strategic plans in collaboration with the holding company CEO and Boards of Directors.
- Ensures that MBA programs and activities support stated goals and objectives.
- Collaborates with holding company CEO to plan, formulate and recommend, for Board of Directors’ approval, policies and programs to further the MBA’s objectives.
- Executes and implements all decisions of the Board, in coordination with the holding company CEO and Board.
- Provides the necessary liaison and staff support to MBA committee chairmen and committees to enable them to properly perform their designated functions and to ensure that committee proposals and recommendations are submitted with adequate background data to the Board of Directors for due consideration.
Advocacy and Industry Representation:
- Registers as a lobbyist with the State of Maryland.
- Serves as the primary spokesperson and advocate when Maryland banking and/or the MBA are engaged by others.
- Maintains close with the American Bankers Association and Independent Community Bankers Association, with the objective of obtaining effective cooperation and coordination of state and national programs and federal advocacy through the state association/ABA alliance and its ICBA counterpart.
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with legislators and appropriate regulatory officials at both the state and national levels.
- Maintains such relationships with other associations, industry, public service organizations, the education community, and vendors as are desirable and necessary in the best interests of the MBA and in conformity with the overall goals and policies of the MBA.
- Represents the association at industry conferences, government hearings and media events.
Member Engagement and Support:
- Engages with and visits banks to understand their needs and ensure the association delivers relevant services and value.
- Keeps attuned to members’ views as to the value and timeliness of MBA’s services and potential services to be considered.
- Maintains responsibility for updating and retention of membership records and assures that all newly-chartered and non-member banks are invited into MBA membership.
- Promotes interest and active participation in the MBA’s activities among the membership.
Operation and Financial Management:
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the MBA, MBA staff, as well as individuals and firms hired on a retainer basis (outside legal counsel, consultants and special advisors) ensuring operational excellence.
- In collaboration with holding company CEO, develops and manages the association budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency.
- Ensures that the holding company CEO and MBA Board of Directors are kept fully informed on the conditions, activities and operations of the MBA and pertinent factors influencing them. Participates in all meetings of the MBA Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Nominating Committee, as well as holding company board and audit committee meetings.
- Carries out such other specific responsibilities as directed by the holding company CEO.
Required Skills/Abilities

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, public policy, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree a strong plus.
- 10+ years of leadership experience, preferred in banking, financial services or advocacy organizations.
- Strong knowledge of the banking industry and relevant regulatory environment.
- Proven experience
- Exceptional communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to advocate effectively at local, state or national level.
