ABOUT THE COMPANY

Our client is an independent, privately-owned wealth management firm, supervising more than $25 billion of client assets for individuals, families, charities, family offices and RIAs.

The company was founded in 1885 as a family office and incorporated as a trust bank in 1928. Throughout its 139-year history, the firm has maintained a proud tradition of providing clients with objective, holistic advice to meet their comprehensive financial needs. As an independent company, unfettered by the demands of Wall Street or a parent company, it has maintained a steadfast commitment to the business of providing clients with exceptional service. This focus and commitment has resulted in a sustained 98% client retention rate for decades.

The firm currently has ~150 dedicated employees. The close-knit culture and team approach facilitate a firm-wide dedication to client satisfaction, high ethical standards, and sophisticated solutions for its clients. The firm manages client investments using a hybrid open architecture approach that accesses top-tier managers, while allowing for direct management of individual stocks and bonds. The firm offers industry-leading expertise in trust and estate administration and access to New Hampshire’s favorable trust laws through its affiliate. Additionally, the firm has a long history of providing white-glove bank custodial services to family offices, RIAs and independent trustees. The full spectrum of services includes wealth planning, philanthropic advice, tax return preparation, donor advised funds, and a broad array of family office support.

Based in Boston, the firm is led by an experienced executive team that is committed to growing the firm in a manner that continues to provide outstanding service to clients while also providing a very attractive long-term proposition for employees. Over the past ten years under the leadership of the current CEO, the company has undergone a transformation from a staid institution into a more dynamic firm focused on the future, growth and a performance culture. While still maintaining its long- standing values and integrity, the firm aspires to manage itself as a “139-year old startup.” As a result, client assets have more than doubled, client retention has remained industry-leading, annual new business has grown many fold, while the company has perpetuated its 90+ years of consecutive profitability.

THE COO ROLE

Our client seeks to recruit a high performing executive to serve as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Chief Operating Officer position is critically important to effective servicing of external and internal client constituencies, and to the company’s continued growth. As a key member of the senior leadership team, this individual will closely collaborate with other senior managers to enhance the company’s client service, while supporting its organic growth and evaluating inorganic opportunities. This person will manage day-to-day operations, technology, tax, project management, middle office functions, and corporate services. Given the importance of its operations to both the safety and soundness of the trust company, and its scalable growth, it is imperative that this leader empowers great professionals, promotes collaboration, and maintains focus on efficiencies and continuous process improvements.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in bank and wealth management operations with a track record of distinctive operational management and leadership of transformational scaling. Further, this individual will bring superior capabilities in developing trust, leading a team and engaging collaboratively, and communicating across the organization. Lastly, as Chief Operating Officer, this professional must be comfortable operating in a mid-sized, organizationally-flat and highly entrepreneurial environment with evolving legacy systems and processes.

The Chief Operating Officer will be based in Boston and report to the CEO.
